You Know for Cello & Bass Ensemble | Score & Curriculum Guide

Composed by Bithyah Israel

Part of the Castle of our Skins | Boston Public Schools Collection

Inspired by Lauryn Hill's landmark album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, You Know is a thoughtful and expressive work for cello and bass ensemble by composer Bithyah Israel. Exploring themes of perseverance, integrity, and staying true to one's purpose, the piece encourages performers to reflect on the values that keep us grounded and focused amid life's challenges.

Drawing inspiration from Hill's song "Everything Is Everything," Israel likens the delicate balance of life to a record player's needle remaining connected to the groove—reminding us to stay aligned with what matters most so that our unique voices can be heard and shared with the world.

The accompanying curriculum guide by Díjí Kay provides ready-to-use lessons and activities that help students engage with the musical, emotional, and personal themes of the work while developing ensemble and performance skills.
