On May 2, 2025, we received unexpected news: the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) rescinded a $20,000 grant previously recommended for MassQ Ball 2025. This decision is part of a broader pattern of federal funding cuts to arts organizations nationwide.
The NEA's notification cited a shift in grantmaking priorities to projects that align with the current administration's focus on "the nation's rich artistic heritage and creativity." Unfortunately, this reorientation has led to the termination of funding for numerous organizations, including ours.
MassQ Ball is more than an event; it's a celebration of identity, creativity, and community, bringing together Black, Brown, Asian American, and Indigenous artists in Boston's Arnold Arboretum. The sudden loss of funding threatens our ability to provide this free, public, multidisciplinary experience.
We are not alone in facing these challenges. Other Massachusetts arts organizations, such as Castle of Our Skins, have also experienced abrupt funding withdrawals, leading to financial strain and uncertainty about future programming.

In response, we are launching a crowdfunding campaign to raise $20,000 to fill the gap left by the NEA's withdrawal. Your support is crucial to ensure MassQ Ball 2025 proceeds as planned.
