call for proposals (Quilts)

Castle of our Skins, a Boston-based education and concert series organization dedicated to celebrating Black artistry through music, is seeking proposals for new works inspired by the tradition of quilting within Black culture.

Castle of our Skins will select 1 to 3 of the proposals to receive world premieres for this Spring 2020 project.
Read more about the winning composers HERE.

THERE IS NO APPLICATION FEE FOR THIS CALL.

Compensation:
Selected composers will receive a premiere, a professional recording (audio and video) of the performance, features on our website and social media, and the possibility of future performances. Composers who opt to attend the premiere performance and need any supporting documentation to secure funding will receive such documentation in a timely manner.

Eligibility and style:
This call for proposals is open to anyone who defines him/her/themself as a composer of music. We welcome all styles and genres of music. Please visit our website (view past repertoire here) to learn more about our programming.

Deadline:
The December 30, 2018, 11:59PM Eastern Standard Time has passed.

Instrumentation:
The proposed piece may incorporate the full roster or a subset of the following instruments: flute, chamber strings, piano, and voice. Projects involving projected still or moving image, dance, and/or spoken word will also be accepted.

Content of submission:
Please include the following in one e-mail:
  • A 1-page bio (PDF), including your most current contact information, website(s), and social media handles
  • A 1 – 2 page description of your proposed new work. Possible elements to consider are structure of the work, instrumentation (full or subset), duration (10 minutes maximum), how your piece relates to the quilting tradition, what drew you to such a project, cultural relevance, melodic and/or harmonic devices, pitch/register/rhythmic devices, proportionality, improvisation, and more. For inspirational resources, please consult the following:

The Women of Color Quilters Network
          The Gee's Bend Quilters
          Harlem Needle Arts

  • If the piece includes text, please include, in a SEPARATE DOCUMENT FROM YOUR PROPOSAL, the full text that you would like to use in the proposed work, proof of public domain or permission to use the text, and any translations/transliterations.
  • A music example: 2 – 3 samples of PDF scores and audio links (personal website links, soundcloud, Google Docs, YouTube/Vimeo, WeTransfer, and Bandcamp preferred) of your previous work that you feel would most represent the work you would compose for this project. If your proposed work will be completely different, then past work samples will suffice with an indication that the work for the proposal will be different from your past work. PLEASE DO NOT ATTACH AUDIO FILES TO YOUR EMAIL!
