A Little history workshop

Music, storytelling, history and poetry intertwined in this fun-filled, interactive workshop created by COOS' co-founders Anthony Green (composer) and Ashleigh Gordon (violist). Presented FREE as part of Free Fun Fridays at the historic Museum of African American History in Boston.

COOS was thrilled to host an evening not to be missed complete with delicious local foods and of course new and old music written by black composers. There was even be a chance for the house concert-goer to join in on the music making with audience participation.

Call for works: solo piano

COOS was excited to announce the results of its 2013-2014 Call for Piano Works by Black Composers: Gary Nash's Argemarillo Fantasy No. 3 and Nailah Nombeko's Preludes for Piano. Both were performed in outreach recitals by pianist Anthony Green

Call for proposals: art songs

​COOS announced the winners of its Call for Art Song Proposals inspired by the words of Black artists, leaders, and other figures of Black history, both past and present:
  • Samuel Beebe
  • Ethan Frederick Greene
  • Frank S. Li
Learn more about the Call for Art Song Proposal and winners.

Commissioned premieres for voice and chamber ensemble will be featured in the 2015 – 2016 season with a planned performance for the Spring of 2016.

Education Workshops

​COOS Director of Educational Programming, Seychelle Dunn, brought elements of jazz, improvisation and scat singing to children through the original workshop Ella Scats the Little Lamb.

Bayard Rustin Community Breakfast

COOS made a special appearance at the AIDS' Action Committee's 26th annual Bayard Rustin Community Breakfast.  Commemorating and celebrating the life and work of Bayard Rustin, one of the unsung heroes of the Civil Rights Movement, the Breakfast recognizes the roles of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people from communities of color in the fight against AIDS.  COOS special guests Michael Dahlberg and Quentin Brandèl performed Bill Banfield's "Spiritual Songs."

ACF's national composer night out

​As part of the American Composers Forum's "National Composer Night Out," Castle of our Skins hosted a discussion about Black composers, past and present. Moderated by COOS' leader Ashleigh Gordon, the FREE evening included a panel discussion with Boston composers, scholars performers and educators Bill Banfield, Julius Williams and Jonathan Bailey Holland.

oh, freedom!

​COOS, with a collaboration of the dynamic spoken word artist Amber Rose Johnson, teamed up to create a new work for spoken word and chamber ensemble inspired by the abolitionist and civil rights movements. Modernized text from activists and original poetry rubbed elbows with music inspired by slave songs, the civil war era, as well as civil rights, gospel and contemporary classical music.
